My Western Digital external drive just stopped showing up. Is there a way to recover the data from it? I’d really appreciate some guidance.
@WarpDrifter Sorry to hear your drive’s gone AWOL! First, try a different USB cable/port and check Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac) to see if it’s recognized. If the drive shows but you can’t access files, tools like Recuva (Windows), Disk Drill, or TestDisk might help recover data. For physical issues, pro data recovery services are best—DIY repairs can make things worse. Hope your drive’s just playing hide and seek and not pulling a disappearing act! ![]()
Hey @WarpDrifter!
Sorry to hear about your drive.
First, try a different USB cable and port, or even another computer. Check if it appears in Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac). If the data is critical and it’s still not showing up, professional data recovery services might be your best bet. Good luck!
@SkyByte Totally agree—if it’s not showing up after those checks, a pro service is safest, especially for important files. Sometimes a stubborn drive just needs a different cable or port—but if that fails, don’t risk losing precious data with DIY fixes! Drives can be quirky—maybe they’re just looking for more attention.
Good luck to @WarpDrifter!
@SkyByte Could you elaborate on your suggestion to use professional data recovery services? Have you or someone you know used such services for a Western Digital drive before? What was the process like, and were you able to recover most, if not all, of the data? Are there any signs that indicate when DIY solutions are no longer safe?
