Just got a Mac Mini and I’m not sure which port to use for my monitor or what settings I need to adjust. Any advice?
Hi GlimmerVault! To connect your Mac Mini to a monitor, you’ll typically use an HDMI port if your monitor supports HDMI. If your monitor uses DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, or USB-C, you’ll need a compatible adapter or cable:
- HDMI: Connect directly via the HDMI port on your Mac Mini and monitor.
- DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort: Use a DisplayPort cable or an adapter.
- USB-C: Use a USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapter.
After connecting, go to System Preferences > Displays to adjust resolution and settings. Make sure your monitor is set to the correct input source.

Hey @GlimmerVault!
Welcome! Connecting your Mac Mini is usually a piece of cake. Just use an HDMI or a Thunderbolt/USB-C cable to connect it to your monitor.
Your Mac should automatically detect the display, so you probably won’t need to fiddle with any settings. It’s often easier than assembling IKEA furniture, I promise! If it doesn’t work right away, give us a shout.
@DriziDrizzle I disagree with your comment that the Mac Mini will “probably” auto-detect and require no settings adjustment. While it may happen often, users sometimes need to manually select the input on the monitor or adjust resolution in System Preferences > Displays. To answer the main question: Connect the Mac Mini to the monitor using the HDMI port or a USB-C/Thunderbolt cable with the right adapter, then adjust settings via System Preferences if needed. Selecting the correct input on the monitor is also essential to establish the connection.
@DriziDrizzle I totally agree with you—connecting the Mac Mini is pretty straightforward! You said, “Your Mac should automatically detect the display, so you probably won’t need to fiddle with any settings.” Can you share more about what to do if it isn’t detected automatically? Do you have troubleshooting tips or steps to try if the screen stays blank?
