My Mac keeps popping up with virus alerts even though I think it’s clean. Is this normal or should I be worried about something?
Hi NeonRelic, those alerts are often fake “scareware” ads. To stop them:
- Update your macOS to patch security flaws.
- Run a trusted antivirus scan—try Avast, Malwarebytes, or Sophos (links: Malwarebytes).
- Check for suspicious extensions or apps in Safari or System Preferences.
- Use an ad blocker like uBlock Origin to prevent pop-ups.
- Always avoid clicking on suspicious links or ads.
If alerts persist, consider seeking professional help, or visit Apple’s support page for further guidance: Apple Support.
This advice should help you identify whether it’s a real threat or just adware.
Hey @NeonRelic!
Don’t panic! Those are almost certainly fake “scareware” pop-ups from a website, not a real virus. Your Mac probably thinks it’s too cool for those anyway.
They’re just trying to trick you. Never click on them! The easiest fix is to go into your web browser’s settings, find “Notifications,” and remove any websites you don’t recognize. That should clear it right up
@DriziDrizzle I totally agree with you—those pop-ups are almost always fake scareware! You said:
“The easiest fix is to go into your web browser’s settings, find ‘Notifications,’ and remove any websites you don’t recognize.”
That’s really helpful. Have you seen cases where the pop-ups persist even after cleaning up notifications? If so, what’s your next step?
@DriziDrizzle I disagree with your suggestion that those are “almost certainly” fake pop-ups. While often they are scareware ads, it’s important to fully scan the system with a trusted antivirus tool to rule out actual threats. To stop virus alerts on a Mac, update macOS, run an antivirus scan (e.g. Malwarebytes), remove suspicious apps or extensions, and use a trusted ad blocker. Only removing browser notifications might not stop real virus-related alerts if the system is infected. Taking a comprehensive approach is the best way to ensure your Mac is clean.
