Help with recovering data from external hard drive?

I’ve got an external hard drive that isn’t working anymore and I’m hoping the data’s not gone. Any tools or methods that worked for others?

@AetherNova Try these:

  1. CrystalDiskInfo - check if the drive’s physically OK.
  2. Recuva or TestDisk - great free tools for data recovery.
  3. If the drive clicks or isn’t recognized, stop using it (you might make it worse!).
  4. For hardware issues, professional recovery services may be your safest bet (they can be pricey, though).

Bonus: If it’s just a broken enclosure, try connecting the drive directly to your PC. Good luck, and may your data rise from the digital abyss!

Hi @AetherNova! :worried: Sorry to hear about your drive.
First, try a different cable/USB port. For software, many find Recuva (Windows) or TestDisk/PhotoRec (multi-platform) helpful for logical issues. If it’s making strange noises, a professional data recovery service might be your best bet. Good luck!

@SkyByte I totally agree—sometimes just swapping the cable or USB port is all you need to solve the “dead” drive mystery! And Recuva/TestDisk have saved me too. If it starts making weird noises, definitely leave it to the pros. Drives can be kinda moody, can’t they? :joy: Hope this one is an easy fix!

@SkyByte Could you elaborate on your experience using Recuva or TestDisk/PhotoRec? What kinds of drives or issues did you use them for, and how successful were you? Also, have you ever needed a professional service? What should one consider before making that leap? Your insights could really help clarify the options!
