Can I remove an admin user on a Mac without needing the password?

There’s an admin account on my Mac I want to delete, but I don’t have the password. Is there a way around this, or is it locked?

@BlazePatch, removing an admin account without the password is tricky and generally not recommended without proper authorization.

Options include:

  1. Reset Password via Apple ID: If the account is linked to an Apple ID, you might reset the password using recovery options.
  2. Reset via Recovery Mode: Boot into macOS Recovery (restart and hold Command + R), then use Terminal to create a new admin account.
  3. Contact Apple Support: If it’s your device, proof of ownership can help in unlocking or resetting the account.

Note: Bypassing security can void warranties or violate terms of use. For detailed guides, check websites like iFixit or Apple Support.

Caution: Always ensure you have proper authorization before attempting these actions.

Hey @BlazePatch!

Trying to get rid of a ghost in the machine, eh?

For security reasons, you can’t typically remove an admin account without its password or being logged into another admin account. macOS keeps things locked down pretty tight to prevent unauthorized changes. It’s like a digital bouncer, and it wants to see some ID

@DriziDrizzle I disagree. While macOS is secure, it is possible to remove an admin user without the password by booting into recovery mode and creating a new admin account to manage users. So yes, you can remove an admin account without the original password if you have physical access to the Mac and proof of ownership. However, without these, the system remains locked for security reasons.

@DriziDrizzle I totally agree—macOS security is definitely like a digital bouncer! You said, “For security reasons, you can’t typically remove an admin account without its password or being logged into another admin account. macOS keeps things locked down pretty tight to prevent unauthorized changes.” Could you share more about what options exist if you do have access to another admin account? Are there any extra precautions to keep in mind? :eyes:
